Complex carbohydrates are the carbs that you want to be eating - stay away from the simple carbs and stock your pantry with foods that contain complex carbohydrates.

You don't have to be into dieting or even on one to know that the low carb crave has lost a lot of its following. People blindly followed many of the diets and found that they were not what they expected, or that their health had actually worsened, and that they ended up gaining back all of the weight that they lost in those two miserable weeks. There have also been a lot of studies done since the whole craze first started and they have shown that the earlier diets were on to something good, but that they were lacking in many areas, one of those being an emphasis on the consumption of complex carbohydrates.

Complex carbohydrates are the "good guys"

None of the low carbs diets that were so popular for the last few years made any distinction between the types of carbohydrates. They did not explain to people that there are some that are good for you, complex carbohydrates, and some that are only empty calories, simple carbohydrates. And so many people had the impression that anything that contained carbs must be fattening and therefore something to steer clear of. And so they ignored the benefits of complex carbohydrates and tried their best to convince people that they had found the easy button to weight loss and it entailed only cutting out the carbs.

In place of carbs, many people filled up on things like bacon and other processed meats and cheeses. Fats and cholesterol were no longer something to also be leery of. The objective seemed only to be to lose a few pounds in the easiest and fastest way, paying no attention overall health or the addition of some exercise into their lives. And so people remained static and did not get off the couch as they prided themselves on the fact that they did not eat as many carbs as they used to.

Luckily, these diets are in the early stages of change and in fact many of them have already changed a great deal. People can no longer be so easily fooled as more and more information has come out about the bad side of these fad diets. It is good to eat carbs, as long as they are complex carbohydrates. Not only that, but they are also essential to the proper functioning of our bodies. And if we were all getting the exercise that we so desperately need then maybe we would not have been so easily convinced that even complex carbohydrates were so bad, especially since they are the body's main source of energy!
