Why Low Carb Diets are Losing Popularity

A low carbohydrate diet sounds appealing at first. After all, what other kind of diet allows you to have meat, eggs and cheese (not that reduced fat stuff, either)? But believe it or not, people do get burned out on eating that kind of food. And when that happens, they usually drop their low carbohydrate diet.

But a low carbohydrate doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. As long as you don't take it to extremes, it can actually benefit you. Should you cut down to 20 grams of carbs a day for two weeks? Maybe for two weeks it wouldn't hurt, but the next stage only allows you to have 60 grams of carbs a day while you're losing weight, and that's the part you should rethink. Why? Because humans need 130 grams of carbs a day in order for their bodies to function properly. Sure, you can get by with taking supplements, but that's a lot of pills to swallow in a day.

A far better option is to cut back to 130 grams of carbs a day. Right now, you might not have any concept of what that means. So why not count how many carbs you're currently ingesting every day for a week. Don't cut back just yet. And be honest! Nobody is judging you. Because some foods aren't labeled (think fresh fruit, vegetables and meat) you might need a carb counter. Chances are, you're eating far more than 130 grams a day. In fact, it might be well over 250 grams. Simply cutting back to 130 grams of carbs a day is a low carbohydrate in and of itself. And it's a lot easier to do if you choose the right carbs--whole grain and whole wheat bread instead of white, fruits and vegetables, whole wheat pasta, brown or wild rice and oats. Cut out anything with white flour and refined sugar. Will you lose weight quickly this way? Sort of. It's not as fast as an all-out hard core low carb diet, but it's also not as slow as other methods (especially if you throw exercise in the mix). You will lose, and since you'll lose more slowly, you might find it easier to keep the weight off.
