Even in dieting there are good and bad aspects, especially with carbohydrates. For those of you who didn't know it, there are things such as good and bad carbohydrates. The tricky thing is, you need both in your diet. Explaining how a good carbohydrate and a bad carbohydrate work can be difficult, but simply put, a good carbohydrate takes longer to break down and a bad carbohydrate breaks down a lot quicker. What does this mean for the dieter? Well, it means the dieter has to know just how much of which carbohydrate they need to eat and when. Each has their place in the diet and each has their benefits.

Benefits of the good carbohydrate:

A good carbohydrate -- in simple terms -- is found more in nature. It takes longer to break down and fills the dieter up when they eat. Oatmeal, spaghetti, etc. are good carbs. What this means is that after eating, you'll be full and feel full for a while. No need to necessarily snack between meals. And this is a good thing. The last thing you want to do when dieting is to snack too much in between meals. It could throw the diet off. However, you don't want to go too long without eating.

Benefits of the bad carbohydrate:

The name can be misleading, but even bad carbohydrates can be just as important. However, it's more for short term use. Have you ever wondered why athletes eat candy bars on the sidelines? It's because it gives you that boost of energy you need for a short amount of time. It's not as healthy, but it gets you going when you need it. It can be just as important as the good carbohydrate, but for different reasons. Either way, both play their parts.
